As an education innovation project with its founding roots in both Silicon Valley and Beijing, ETU Education is dedicated to offer a student-centered whole-person education by combining progressive pedagogy, including social emotional learning, project/phenomenon baesd learning and real world inputs, with Chinaʼs culturally-rich curriculum, so as to cultivate active lifelong learners with high self-efficacy and innovative spirits, and most importantly, a passion to make change in their community.
Since the first school in Beijing in 2016, ETU has now built a global family of progressive schools in Palo Alto (imagination lab school-Global ETU Family), Beijing and Guangzhou in China. Through the partnership with the 25-year-old Beijing BISS International School (BISS) that offers all three International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, ISS will become a new addition to ETUʼs global network of partners.
Meanwhile, ETU is much more than a school network. With a unique team that is comprised of experienced educators, seasoned management executives and IT platform designers and engineers, ETU is building a platform that supports a better education ecosystem, in which students are put at the center of learning, teacher are well supported by a series of empowering professional development program, and school is put at the center of the community.
By addressing the core challenges of todayʼs education systematically,ETU hopes to explore a social engagement mechanism, so that the cognitive frontier of the society could be really brought into basic education to empower everyone to become the best version of themselves.
Reimagining Schools in a Hyperconnected World
Before March 2016, I would never have thought of myself as having any connection to the word ‘education’ in a professional sense.
Something happened that spring. On the surface, it was triggered by my eldest son’s time to start primary school, and our family’s move from California to Beijing. However, these two pivotal moments awakened something in me, helping me to see the links between many of my random and seemingly irrelevant experiences with education and making them suddenly relevant. This random list of experiences includes my own memories as a student, ten years working at McKinsey, recruiting and training college graduates, supporting career development for youth, three years as a minor social influencer (my husband and I have a WeChat blog with 700K followers), receiving multiple inquiries from young people confused about the future and, of course, my experience as a mother.
Education had long been a major source of entanglement for me. Everyone around me, (both in China and the US), complain about the problems and challenges around today’s education. And yet, although their complaints all seem to make sense in some way, it is hard to derive anything concrete from them, let alone come up with concrete alternatives. In that spring, these ‘connections’ that occurred to me seemed to have suddenly switched a light on, allowing me to see education in a clearer way.
ETU School and our whole community embody the following values: Inside Out, Positive Leadership, Action Oriented, Be Yourself, Celebrate Each Other, Think Different and Make Magic.
The ETUʼs Values represent the qualities and characteristics of all members of our learning community. We expect all students and teachers to model and promote these values in their daily lives.
Teachers are always the greatest asset of the school. We believe teachers are researchers and innovators along with their role of being instructors in the education system.
Therefore, every ETU teacher is given the freedom to be innovative in their teaching practice. Teachers are encouraged to go beyond their comfort zone to research and implement new pedagogical practices.
ETU offers a holistic assessment and a certifying mechanism for teachers based on 5 key aspects of their role (curator, expert, facilitator, coach and advocate). This helps guide their efforts in personal and professional
Besides, ETU is building a professional development system for teachers by leveraging the wealth of professional development know-how in the private sector. Over the past two and half years, ETUʼs professional development
